I am joined by Timothy Gay (@theinfinitetransition on Instagram) on this episode of FWG Chat (originally aired on April 30, 2019). Timothy and I go deep into the mental health aspect of obesity, prior to, during, and after weight loss. We discuss why losing weight won’t necessarily cure the insecurities that you may have been dealing with previously. Some important points to gather in our conversation include:
- The goal shouldn’t be to lose weight but to be optimally healthy (losing weight is a part of being optimally healthy).
- Optimal health encourages us to not focus strictly on physical health but to address all Four Pillars of Health (Physical, Mental, Emotional, Spiritual).
- It took years to get to the point you are currently in, so the journey toward optimal health journey will likewise take time.
- Don’t use other people as “the goal” but as inspiration.
- There’s no such thing as perfection in an optimal health journey — One day your physical health may be up, but your spiritual health is down, etc. So don’t go after “the perfection,” go after “the harmony.”
- Mental health IS physical health. The body can’t survive without the mind, so we have to take care of both; What affects one will affect the other.
As a society, we are often reluctant to talk about mental health. It’s our hope that this conversation will spark awareness on this important topic!
