FWG CHAT | EPISODE 19 | DISCUSSING CHILDHOOD OBESITY WITH DR. DYAN HES

I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off my summer pediatric series than to talk to Dr. Dyan Hes (@healthyweightforkids on Instagram) on the subject of childhood obesity!! On this episode of FWG Chat (originally aired on June 18, 2019), we covered a plethora of topics! Some of them include:

  • Determining whether our definition of “moderation” is skewed. When people say they just wanna live their life and have their junk food “in moderation,” what does that really mean? Is having junk food two to four times a week TRULY moderation?
  • We talk about how obesity is defined in children. Did you know it’s defined differently for kids than adults?
  • We shared the fact that there are very few TRUE genetic causes of obesity. In Dr. Hes’ 20 years in practice, a patient was never referred to her with an undiagnosed genetic problem. This is actually very good news because it means children’s obesity is almost always reversible.
  • We touched upon complications obese children might experience when they become adults.
  • We talked about portion sizes. Just like obesity is defined differently for kids than adults, portion sizes for an adult aren’t the same as portion sizes for a child.
  • We also shared about ways you could “trick” kids into eating more vegetables. Dr. Hes also shared why cauliflower is her favorite vegetable!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Keep in mind, whether you have children or not, the discussion we had can pertain to all members of the family!
